APPOMATTOX, Va. -

His name didn't appear on any ballot, but that didn't stop an Appomattox County man from claiming an open seat on his school board.

Al Jones won a school board seat in the Piney Mountain district of Appomattox, with 245 write-in votes.

An unopposed candidate had been running for the seat, but dropped out after the deadline to appear on the ballot had passed.  That prompted Jones and Sharon Drinkard to launch write-in campaigns.

Jones was declared the winner Friday, after all write-in votes were counted by the registrar's office.
