Thousands of students headed back to school Monday across the region, including the city of Roanoke, which means motorist need to mindful of school zones.

Fishburn Park Elementary School is one of many schools where officers were out Monday morning and afternoon. They say you need to pay close attention to school zone signs. Not only are police patrolling, but a federal grant is allowing for additional officers to be on the road.

“People need to understand that if it was their child they definitely want people to slow down, where they are trying to cross the road and play ball and get on the buses and things like that,” said Roanoke Police officer Ray Shanks.

This school zone is a little unique outside of Fishburn. The speed limit is not 25 mph like you see in other places but 15 mph.
