LYNCHBURG, Va. -

A Bedford County man will represent the United States in a global athletic event.

Jamey Parks is part of the USA Paracanoe National Team.  He's planning to compete in the International Canoe Federation's Sprint World Championships in Moscow next week.

Parks lost his left leg, after being hit by a vehicle in 1999.  With the help of a prosthetic, he's able to train and compete in Olympic-style sports.

Parks has been a part of teams that have won gold and two silver medals in the past.

He's looking forward to winning again next week in Russia.

"Being able to represent the United States is amazing," Parks said.  "My father served in the military and my brother served as well.  I've always been patriotic, so I'm very proud."

Parks, who lives with his family in Forest, hopes to qualify for the 2016 Paraolympic Games in Brazi.  He is current working to raise money for his travels.
