Social media posts by the man accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife helped the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of Kevin Colgan.

After becoming aware of threats Colgan made on social media against his wife, investigators with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office met with the commonwealth’s attorney. They decided to provide his estranged wife with protection, and to have an undercover investigator meet with Colgan.

Colgan and his wife, Sarah Colgan, were in the middle of a divorce when he tried to hire a hitman to kill her. She had a restraining order against him.

A Bedford County man is in jail, accused of trying to have his wife killed.

Kevin Colgan was arrested Thursday. He is charged with solicitation to commit murder of Sarah Colgan.

She is Kevin Colgan's estranged wife. After 30 years of marriage, the couple decided to divorce in October 2012.

Throughout the divorce process, Kevin Colgan made numerous threats to his wife, resulting in an active protective order being filed against him.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, Kevin Colgan met with an undercover investigator to discuss killing his wife. Investigators say Kevin Colgan told the investigator he would pay to have his wife killed.

He was arrested Thursday morning.

Colgan is being held without bond at the Bedford Adult Detention Center.

The couple’s final divorce hearing is in August.
