BEDFORD, Va. -

Bedford leaders are getting a closer look at two schools, before deciding whether one should close.

The Bedford County School Board is touring Thaxton Elementary and Bedford Primary schools Thursday night  An efficiency review conducted by an outside company recommended shutting down one or both of those schools to save money.

Parents from Bedford and Thaxton plan to show up at the tours to protest the closings.  Susan Kirby's children attended Bedford Primary and she wants the option to remain available for other families.

"Bedford Primary is the eighth largest school in the county, as far as enrollment," Kirby told WDBJ7.  "There is no room to house these kids anywhere else."

The tours begin at 6 at Bedford Primary, followed by Thaxton at 7.  Parents can offer feedback on the closings at a public hearing next Tuesday, September 2, at Liberty High School.  Speakers should call the school board office at (540) 586-1045, extension 245 to sign up.
