BEDFORD, Va. -

Bedford County's school board has settled on a site for a new middle school.

Board members voted 6-1 Thursday to purchase 49 acres of land behind Liberty High School for construction of a new Bedford Middle School.

The property currently belongs to Jimmie Morgan, Jr., who will be paid nearly $300,000 for his land.

Bedford developer George Aznavorian offered to donate land along Wheatland Road, adjacent to Route 460 for the new middle school.  A consultant hired by the school board said the property posed "topography issues."

The school board is expected to vote next month to seek construction proposals for the new middle school.  An opening date of August 2016 is being targeted.
