A bill known as Andrew's Law passed through a senate committee today in Richmond.
The law would make it a felony when a reckless driver hits an emergency responder.
Trooper Andrew Fox was killed while directing traffic at the Virginia State Fair in 2012.
The person that hit him was only charged with a misdemeanor.
Trooper Fox's Family was in Richmond today, to encourage lawmakers to support the bill.
"This is a problem that's much bigger than just one person. It's happened so often and things need to change," said Lauren Fox, Andrew's sister.
Senate Bill 293 will now go to a different senate committee.
