Blue Ridge Parkway to stay open during government shutdown
Skyline Drive will be closed
The Roanoke Valley Visitors Bureau is relieved because it found out Monday the parkway would stay open regardless of how long the shutdown lasts.
All of the federally run rest-stops along the parkway are closed, but we're told the road itself was left open because it's a main thoroughfare for a lot of commuters.
"Even though many of the services that the parkway normally provides are not available, people can still see the parkway and see the beautiful fall colors and come down to the valley and enjoy many of the amenities the valley has," said Roanoke Valley Visitors Bureau President Landon Howard.
Explore Park and the Blue Ridge Visitors Center will also remain open because it's operated by Roanoke County.
Skyline Drive will be closed because it's a toll road and the furloughs will prevent someone from staffing the toll booth.
