ROANOKE, Va. -

Hundreds of runners in Roanoke are helping America's military veterans.

Yesterday more than 150 runners gathered at Wasena Park  for the Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration 5-K race.

This is the second year for the event.

All money raised will benefit local military veterans, including the Virginia Wouned Warrior Program and the Military Family Support Center.

"There's over 25,000 veterans in the Roanoke Valley alone, 101,000 in southwest Virginia.  So anything that we can do to assist with soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan and just help their families and bring community support around," said Matt Wade, Regional Director for the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program.

Organizers say this year's numbers are on track with last year's totals.

In 2012, this 5K raised $10,000 dollars.
