A body believed to be of a missing 92-year-old Floyd County man was found Wednesday in Franklin County.

Robert Schmitt was last seen November 16 at a potluck dinner at his Floyd church.

On Wednesday afternoon a car matching the description of Schmitt’s burgundy Buick was found near his Remington Road home. A body believed to be of Schmitt was found near the car.

“This brings a sad ending to a long search for Mr. Schmitt by the Floyd and Franklin Co. Sheriff’s Offices and by many individuals who spent countless hours searching and closure to Mr. Schmitt’s family,” a news release from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office states.

In November his family told WDBJ7 that Schmitt was a retired Baltimore firefighter with health issues who had become forgetful.

According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, it appears that Schmitt opened a gate and drove into a field. His car then went down a ravine about 100 yards before landing near a creek.

The body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for positive identification.
