WICHITA, Kan. - -

A 58-year-old Wichita man named Terry Lee Loewen was arrested early Friday morning for attempting to blow up Mid-Continent Airport in a suicide bombing, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom.

Terry Lee Loewen, 58, is the suspect of an attempted bombing of Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport.

Loewen, who worked at the airport as an avionics technician, was attempting to use a bomb in a vehicle, Grissom said. Grissom said Loewen has been the subject of a six-month investigation since learning of the suspect's plan.

The explosives were fake, authorities said.

"The threat was real," said Michael Kaste of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. "But I was to assure you, the public was never at any risk at all."

He is not believed to be involved with any religious affiliation in the Wichita community.

Loewen was arrested at 5:40 a.m. He will be arraigned in Wichita at 3 p.m. today.

Gov. Sam Brownback was in Wichita for Friday afternoon's news conference.

"The good guys won one today," Brownback said.
