ROANOKE, Va. -

While we're telling people how they should prepare for the cold, animals also need extra care in these conditions.

Dogs and cats should be brought inside.

Even if they're usually "outside" pets, animals advocates say if possible they should be brought into a basement, garage or laundry room - anywhere is better than out in the cold.

"If you can not bring your animal inside please make sure that they have shelter- dog houses so they can get out of the wind, straw is a wonderful thing to help insulate, even if you put some blankets in there, change them out to make sure they're not wet," says Angels of Assisi's Lisa O'Neill.

Angels also reminds people, even with these cold conditions it's important animals have access to water.
