The Christiansburg Park and Ride located across from Falling Branch Elementary School will close by the end of the summer.

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to stop all operations at the lot off of Interstate 81 near exit 118 before the start of the school year.

As a result, it will open a temporary park and ride lot along the Shelor Motor Mile, across from Country Cookin’.

The temporary lot will serve riders while VDOT develops plans for a permanent park and ride facility.

Construction could begin on that as early as next summer.

VDOT plans to remove the pavement of the current lot and restore the area to green space.

Parents raised concerns about the current lot after riders got off the bus and wandered onto school property.

Here is the news release from VDOT:

The existing Park and Ride lot off Interstate 81 at exit 118 near Falling Branch Elementary School will close in August before the start of the Montgomery County school year.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will open a temporary 65-space Park and Ride lot in Christiansburg while plans are being developed to construct a long-term facility that will provide more than 200 parking spaces to replace the existing lot. Both the temporary and long-term lots will be located in Christiansburg off Roanoke Street across from Hubbell Drive.

The existing 65-space Park and Ride lot located near Falling Branch Elementary School will close, and its pavement will be removed to restore this area to green space.

VDOT currently is developing plans for the design of the permanent Park and Ride facility and estimates construction could begin as early as summer 2015.

Funding to relocate and expand the Park and Ride facility at Falling Branch was included in the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s spending plan, the Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) for 2015-2020, which took effect July 1. Approximately $300,000 of the $5.8 million allocated in the SYIP will be spent on the temporary lot.

Relocating the lot will alleviate safety concerns from parents from nearby Falling Branch Elementary School about bus patrons who trespass on school property seeking restrooms or other amenities.
