An electric car is only as good for the climate as the electricity used to power it. In Virginia, that means some all-electric vehicles are better in the long-run.
That is the finding of of a study conducted by Climate Central. The organization looked at emissions over 50- and 100-thousand mile increments. Researchers also factored in emissions for generating the power and manufacturing the vehicle.
More of our power is being generated in natural gas-fired power plants, as opposed to old coal-fired plants. Over 100-thousand miles of driving, that helps push some all-electric vehicles over many gas-powered hybrids.
