Construction in Roanoke Market Area will mean a new, different look
The $1.1 million project will eliminate 26 parking spots
Downtown Roanoke is getting ready for a million dollar makeover in front of the Market Building.
Starting next week, crews will begin getting rid of the 26 parking spaces in favor of a more pedestrian-friendly space.
Project managers hope to complete the project in three months and have it ready for the spring for all those summer concerts, festivals and other special events.
Some of the vendors along Market Street will move into this new plaza area, something city leaders say will help long term.
"In the big picture, this is a really short duration, it's three months. The benefit that we're going to see from a renovated market square is going to be tremendous for those vendors," said City Engineer and project manager Phil Schirmer.
The total cost of the project is $1.1 million.
