The U.S. Forest Service is battling a large fire in the Speedwell area of Wythe County.
The fire is 40 acres, and is burning on the north slope of Horse Heaven Mountain. The fire is located just south of the Speedwell landfill, east of Highway 21.
Around 20 firefighters are on scene. A helicopter is also being sent from Richmond.
Gusts of 21 miles per hour are expected today, and are a concern.
“The county has been in contact with the US Forestry Service and we will continue to monitor the situation very closely,” Wythe County spokesman Jeremy Farley said. “It is important to note that the fire is entirely located in the National Forest and that Wythe County residents and their property are in no significant danger. Should anything change, we will notify the public immediately."
