Fire crews are evaluating a brush fire discovered Thursday morning in Bedford County.
The fire has burned roughly five to 10 acres in the James River Face Wilderness near Big Island. It was discovered around 7:30 Thursday morning, according to Virginia Department of Forestry officials.
Smoke and flames are visible from Routes 501 and 130, just across the James River in Amherst County.
Officials with the U. S. Forest Service say crews will have to hike about a mile to reach the fire. A helicopter is on order to help fight the flames. No home or buildings are threatened.
A Forest Service spokeswoman says there is a moderate to high fire danger Thursday with particularly low humidity.
