Danville City Council voted to double its salary starting next year.

The decision increased council member's pay from $5,000 to $10,000. The mayor's pay increased from $7,000 to $12,000.

The city attorney reminded council it couldn't vote on a raise for another two years if a decision wasn't made last night.

Councilman Buddy Rawley was first against the idea but after hearing that, he changed his mind.

"Was 10,000 and 12,000 the right amounts? That can be debated. It's awkward to give yourself a raise but I think going forward it was the right decision," said Rawley.

This is the first time in 24 years the council has voted for a raise.

The raise is comparable to the pay of the city council in Lynchburg. It makes $8,000 and its mayor makes $10,000. Lynchburg is a larger city than Danville.

Their new pay takes effect in June.
