DANVILLE, Va. -

Dozens of non-profit and emergency groups got a big boost from a large foundation Tuesday afternoon.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region granted more than $600,000 to 42 groups from Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina in Danville.

The money is going to help groups like the Danville Senior Transportation program continue driving older people who don't have cars.

Or the Caswell County, North Carolina rescue squad that needed money to buy an off-road emergency response vehicle.

"We've learned that money is not going to fall from Richmond or from Washington, D.C. to take care of all of our needs and it's up to us to give back to our community," said Debra Dodson, the executive director of The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.

The foundation has awarded more than 17 million dollars since it started in 1996 and gets its money from donors in the region.
