Vinton Police say the driver of the pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the hospital. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver may have suffered a cardiac event before colliding with the police car.

The driver's name is not being released at this time. The Roanoke County Police Department is still investigating the crash.

A detour is in place on Route 24 in Vinton after a driver who may have been suffering a medical emergency hit a police cruiser Friday afternoon.

The police officer was not hurt. Traffic on Route 24 West, also known as Washington Avenue, is being detoured because of the accident, which happened near Jiffy Automotive. The detour will be in place while officers investigate the accident. Traffic is moving on Route 24 East.

According to investigators, an officer stopped to respond to a minor accident. While doing so, the officer noticed a white pick-up truck that was not responding to commands. The truck side-swiped the police cruiser, but the officer was able to avoid the truck.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to the hospital.

Officers hope to have the detour lifted by rush-hour.
