No students were on a Pittsylvania County school bus when it was damaged by a downed tree Thursday morning.

Superintendent James McDaniel said the driver had already dropped off her students and was rounding a blind curve on Route 729 in the Sutherlin area.  That's when a downed tree hit the driver's side of the bus.

McDaniel said the driver was "very fortunate" that she was not seriously hurt.  The tree smashed some of the glass and bent the frame around some of the windows.  The driver kept control of the bus and was able to safely get it off the road, according to McDaniel.
