Downtown Roanoke trash compactor is officially operational
Downtown Roanoke Incorporated partnered with Roanoke City Solid Waste
Today marked a new era for downtown businesses takin' out the trash.
Today was the first official day of the new downtown trash compactor.
Participating businesses get an access card that lets them use the compactor.
Waste Management can monitor the number of uses, the first two per week are free, and then its a dollar per trash can after that.
Considering some businesses paid more than 12-hundred dollars per year for curbside pickup, businesses are optimistic that despite some early headaches, this will be very cost effective.
"I think it's going to be a whole lot more cost-effective for us. I think it's going to be a little bit of a challenge for us logistically at the outset, but I think we're going to be able to work that out. It'll be a lot easier for us to just roll our trash cans over there versus having our trash sit outside," said Mark Guenther with Cornerstone Bar and Grill.
Roanoke City Solid Waste managers will continue curbside pickup until January.
