ROANOKE, Va. -

Four months after Roanoke City installed a trash compactor that was supposed to clean up the streets, it's still getting mixed reviews.

Before the compactor, businesses would put trash out on the street for collection.

Now, businesses can dump two free cans per week and then a dollar per can after that.

Generally, the compactor has been great for small businesses that don't produce a lot of garbage.

"For us it's been great. For us being a small business, if we need to take a load of trash, it takes us 5 minutes," said Craig Smith, owner of R.T. Smith's Delicatessen.

For businesses that produce more waste, they say it's saved money on collection itself.

However, they do have to pay employees overtime for the time it takes to walk the trash to the compactor.
