It's Election Day in Virginia, but that might be a surprise for many people in the state. Polls closed at 7 p.m. and turnout was low.
Roanoke City residents elected three incumbents, Democrat David “Dave” Trinkle, Raphael “Ray” Ferris, and William “Bill” Bestpitch to city council with 19, 15, and 13 percent of the vote, respectively.
In Danville, incumbents John Gilstrap, Alonzo Jones, and Gary Miller will fill three of the four city council seats. James Buckner received 13% of the vote and will fill the fourth seat. Eight candidates were running.
Steven Gould, Philip Campbell, and Sharon Dones were elected to Danville City School Board with 27%, 22% and 18% of the vote, respectively. Five candidates were in the running. Incumbent George Wilson came in last place.
Incumbents Joan Foster and J.R. “Randy” Nelson will fill two city council seats in Lynchburg City.
Treney Tweedy took the third with 19% of the vote.
