ExxonMobil is planning a second cleanup at the site of a former fertilizer plant in Amherst County.
The company has hired Arcadis to remove and replace about 500 cubic yards of soil from about a quarter of an acre in Madison Heights.
ExxonMobil communications consultant Matt Gallagher tells The News & Advance the recent inspections found evidence that a portion of the soil cover had been disturbed.
The company performed remediation actions at the site in 2012 to address contaminants.
Gallagher says Exxon Mobil is the corporate successor to the site's original owner and has never directly owned or operated it.
The latest cleanup could begin in June, pending the county's approval and the current property owners allowing access.
