Acclaimed author and screenwriter David Baldacci spent a little time in Roanoke Thursday evening to kick off Roanoke Valley Reads. The reading project is all about getting people in the community to pick up the same book and enjoy.
The first book selected is Baldacci's "Wish You Well".
It takes place in 1940, after a car accident kills the father of two children and renders their mother mute and semi paralyzed. The kids go to remote Southwest Virginia to live with their great-grandmother on her farm. As New York City natives, they face many challenges in the foreign landscape, prejudice, poverty, death, wavering faith, and a struggle for survival against a powerful coal company. The book, published in 2000, is based on the life of Baldacci's maternal ancestors in the Appalachian hills of Virginia.
Baldacci calls it an honor to be chosen as the author to kick off Roanoke's community-wide reading series.
