SALEM, Va. -

Feeding America Southwest Virginia is hitting the road, with a new effort to distribute more fresh fruits and vegetables.

Thursday morning, the food bank unveiled the newest addition to its fleet, a refrigerated mobile produce unit.

The van and trailer made their first delivery soon after, distributing fresh produce at a food pantry in Shawsville.

Pamela Irvine is the President and CEO of Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

"Our 360-some partner agencies do a great job. Many of them do not have refrigeration, and so therefore they cannot get the fresh fruits and vegetables," she said. "This will enable them to be able to move those fresh fruits and vegetables through the collaborative partnership."

Feeding America Southwest Virginia also announced a major fundraising campaign. The food bank is turning to the public for $3.5 million of the $14.6 million Cornerstone Campaign.
