LYNCHBURG, Va. -

School leaders in Bedford County recognized their best teachers Tuesday.

The school system held its annual Teacher of the Year banquet at Boonsboro Country Club.

This year's top award went to Debra Woodson, an English teacher at Jefferson Forest High School.

Woodson has taught at JF for 17 years and started a successful advanced placement program.

She has worked in education for 29 years.

"I can't believe out of all the people that teach, and we have many fine people who teach in Bedford County, that they would bestow such an honor on me," Woodson said.  "It's very humbling."

Woodson is getting gift certificates and prizes from area businesses and a chair from Sam Moore Furniture.

Teachers of year from each of Bedford County's 23 schools were also honored tonight, including a mother and daughter.  Kimberly Bollinger and Martha Nowlin teach at two of the county's elementary schools.
