A former Amherst County treasurer convicted of embezzling county funds will spend a year in jail.
Sixty-year-old Evelyn Martin of Amherst also must pay restitution.
Martin had pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a public official and money laundering. Prosecutors say she took about $32,500 in 2004 and between 2008 and 2011.
Media outlets report that Amherst County Circuit Court Judge J. Michael Gamble sentenced Martin on Tuesday to 15 years and then suspended all but one year of the term.
Martin had served as treasurer in 2010 and 2011 and had worked in the treasurer's office for 37 years. She retired in January 2012 after losing an election to current Treasurer Garry Friend.
