BOTETOURT CO., Va. -

There are more charges now for the embattled former volunteer fire chief in Buchanan.

Billy Joe Carter is in jail accused of rape, perjury and faces firearms charges.

Thursday, federal prosecutors charged him for lying to get Social Security and Medicare benefits.

Prosecutors say he and his wife failed to disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra income on at least one tax return.

Carter was already in jail on charges stemming from the 2012 rape accusation.

Until that point he was fire chief in Buchanan for six years.

Story from November 19, 2012:

A former fire chief will have to stay in jail a little while longer.

On Monday morning a judge denied bail for Billy Joe Carter. Carter is accused of rape in Botetourt County.

This summer, he resigned as Buchanan's Volunteer Fire Chief after allegations of threatening another firefighter.

The Commonwealth's Attorney told the judge Monday morning that Carter is being investigated by federal authorities, but he wouldn't say why or by what federal agency.

Billy Joe Carter will be back in court at the end of this month for a preliminary hearing.
