RADFORD, Va. -

A former professor who once taught criminal justice at Radford University has been sentenced to 100 years in prison.

New River Valley reporter Orlando Salinas was in the courtroom and watched as the 35 year father walked quietly into Judge Joey Showalter's courtroom.

Wearing shower slippers and metal chains, Taj Mahon-Haft shuffled into Radford City circuit court Thursday morning.

Almost a year ago, a neighbor called 911 after seeing the front door of Mahon-Haft's Radford home, wide open.

Radford prosecutor Chris Rehak said in court that police entered the home looking for a burglar. Instead they found illegal drugs and eventually thousands of images of child pornography on Mahon-Haft's personal computers and thumb drives.

"In all of this there was no evidence that we found that he had hurt any children or manufactured any child pornography. We found a couple of pictures of his own child and they were questionable," Rehak said.

The former Radford University criminal justice professor pleaded guilty to 50 counts of possessing child porn and three counts of drug possession, among other charges.

Mahon-Haft's sentence was set at 100 years in prison, though he'll only have to serve 15.

After sentencing, this reporter followed Mahon-Haft's father outside the municipal building as he got into his SUV and asked, "What would you like the public to understand about what happened today and your son?"

The father slammed the door without any comment.

Outside the courtroom, Mahon-Haft's mother, Kathy-Jane Alvarado had written a brief statement, which read in part that she supported her son. I asked if she believed her son had child porn.

"Absolutely not. No that's not Taj," Alvarado said.

In the end, Taj Mahon-Haft did not apologize publicly in the courtroom for anything.

He did ask to be moved from the local jail to a state facility as soon as possible.

A former criminal justice professor will spend 15 years in prison for child pornography and drug convictions.

Taj Mahon-Haft entered a plea agreement Thursday morning in Radford Circuit Court.  Prosecutors said they found more than 10,000 images and movies on Mahon-Haft's computers.  A judge sentenced Mahon-Haft to 100 years in prison and suspended all but 15.  He will also have to register as a sex offender after he's released.

When asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Mahon-Haft only asked that he be moved out of the New River Valley Jail and into a state prison as soon as possible.

Mahon-Haft taught criminal justice courses at Radford University before his arrest.
