Here is the news release with more information:
Clifton Forge Main Street, Inc. will begin a six week free shuttle service between Clifton Forge and Douthat State Park to study the feasibility of establishing a regular seasonal shuttle service between the two locations.
With grant funding received from the Alleghany Foundation and the cooperation of RADAR Bus Service, a four day per week free shuttle service will begin on Thursday July 11th and run Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Sunday August 18th.
Called the Douthat-Clifton Forge Connector, the bus will leave the Clifton Forge Shuttle Bus Stop at 501 E Ridgeway Street, every hour, on the hour from 11 AM through 7 PM on Thursdays and Sundays, allowing passengers to enjoy daytime activities at Douthat State Park such as the lake with a beachfront, the Lakeview Restaurant and the Camp Store, as well as hiking trails and Park Rangers’ Nature Presentations.
These trips on Thursdays and Sundays will return to Clifton Forge from Douthat Park every hour on the half hour beginning at 11:30 AM at the shuttle bus stop in front of the Lakeview Restaurant. This will allow visitors staying at Douthat State Park an opportunity to visit Clifton Forge on a free shuttle bus and discover all the wonderful shops, businesses, and restaurants in Clifton Forge, as well as the C & O Heritage Museum, The Clifton Forge School of the Arts, The Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, and the Historic Amphitheatre. On Fridays and Saturdays the bus schedule will begin at 2 PM in Clifton Forge and 2:30 PM at Douthat’s Lakeview Restaurant and end at 9:00 and 9:30 PM. The only restriction to riding the Douthat-Clifton Forge Connector is that children 12 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
A Clifton Forge Main Street-trained volunteer will be on the bus for every round trip each day to welcome passengers, offer a brief overview of the Alleghany Highlands and gather data that will be helpful in gauging the demand for such a shuttle service on a more permanent basis.
“Clifton Forge Main Street is very excited as they prepare to launch this service”, said Debby Faulkenbury, Executive Director of Clifton Forge Main Street. “We believe that such a service can become a significant catalyst, benefitting both the Town of Clifton Forge and Douthat State Park.”
“This service will provide an opportunity for citizens of the town and surrounding area to visit Douthat more frequently,” said Clifton Forge Main Street President Mott Atherholt. “ The Shuttle Connector will also bring many, more people vacationing at Douthat into Clifton Forge where they will soon learn that we are indeed a scenic, busy and friendly community and they’ll be able to do this without having to get into their vehicles to make that drive and at no charge.”
