Greenbrier Classic counts on western Virginia volunteers
The Greenbrier Classic golf tournament doesn't happen without hundreds of volunteers. And many of them hail from this side of the state line.
This week, golf fans have converged on White Sulphur Springs, for the fourth edition of the PGA event. The volunteers include Mike Akers, the former assistant principal of Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem.
Akers is a West Virginia native now in his third year volunteering at the tournament. He says he has enjoyed participating in an event that showcases the area.
"It's a beautiful state and I'm proud of it," Akers told us. "I was born here and raised and so it's nice to showcase and highlight the mountains of West Virginia."
The Greenbrier Classic continues at the resort in White Sulphur Springs through the weekend.
