ROANOKE, Va. -

A group is giving new life to an old garage in Southeast Roanoke.

Real Experiences Affecting Change, or REACH, works to help bring neighbors together through community service.

The group took on a new challenge Thursday.

The group spent the last few weeks fixing up an abandoned garage along Dale Avenue in Roanoke and now that the job is finished, they wanted to make it look extra special so they spent the day painting a mural on either side of the structure.

Organizers hope it will cheer people up as they drive along Dale Avenue.

"Every couple minutes there someone biking, someone driving, someone walking through here and we thought if we had this mural in plain view where before there was an eyesore,” said organizer Theo Pichalski.

REACH is nearing the end of its mission to clean up neighborhoods and repair homes in Roanoke. Their goal is to fix more than 20 homes by the end of summer.
