SALEM, Va. -

A family of six is out of their home in Salem after a fire Tuesday evening.

A fire badly damaged both floors of the two story home at 439 Mount Vernon Avenue.

It started around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday. It took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. High winds made the fire difficult to contain, according to Salem Fire-EMS. .

Investigators haven't said if they know what started the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the two adults and four children who lost their home.
