ROANOKE, Va. -

Hundreds of students will head back to school in just a few days.

Roanoke city and county schools are gearing up for the 2014 academic year, but they're not alone.

You can expect to see more police officers in our region. They will be patrolling in and around school zones.

Officers say the biggest problem they see every year is drivers passing buses while their lights are on.

"The ones who are running late for work that go around that school bus,” said Roanoke City Police Officer Rick Clark. “The drivers can actually call in and talk to us and we will try to get there as quickly as we can."

It is considered reckless driving to pass a school bus with its lights on. Officers say even if the lights aren't on, you still need to stop when kids are getting off and on the bus.
