A Botetourt County business is joining an effort to help feed the hungry.

Hunters for the Hungry is a program where sportsmen and women donate their kill to people in need.

That meat is then distributed to area food banks.

There are several processing places throughout the region, but Harris Meat Processing in Buchanan is the first in Botetourt County.

So far, they've had a handful of hunters donate.

"The Hunters for the Hungry are having us take everything, cut it up and put it into hamburger other than tenderloin. They want the tenderloin butterflied, cubed and then we package it. We vacuum seal it. Nothing's meat wrapped like a lot of places," explains processor Mike Harris.

Last year, hunters donated more than 279-thousand pounds of venison throughout the Commonwealth.

This year, Hunters for the Hungry has set a goal of 370-thousand pounds of meat.
