Here's another sign of just how cold it is in our region.
The Liberty University men's hockey team was able to practice on a frozen pond Wednesday morning.
The school president, Jerry Falwell, Jr. invited the players to the icy water on his Bedford County farm.
Falwell said school officials and coaches tested the ice carefully before anyone started skating.
Liberty has an indoor skating rink, the LaHaye Ice Center, but hockey coach Kirk Handy says it's a rare treat for his team to practice outside.
"It's a good change," said Handy. "Being outside creates some excitement and it allows us to get back to where hockey was started."
It's usually not cold enough in our area for lakes to freeze and allow for ice activities. Falwell said it's been at least four winters since the ice on his pond was thick enough for skating.
