LYNCHBURG, Va. -

Hundreds of young athletes are spending the weekend in Lynchburg.

The city is hosting the Virginia State Majors Little League Baseball Tournament. 11 and 12-year-olds from Northern Virginia to Bristol are competing at Miller Park.

This is the first time in more than 50 years Lynchburg has hosted the event. It's expected to give the area an economic boost.

"We anticipate about 1,000 people, maybe 2,000," said tournament director, Matt Combs. "Tonight there will probably be 1,000 people on this field alone, because Lynchburg and Franklin County will be squaring off."

The tournament runs through next Wednesday. The winner advances to a regional competition in Georgia.
