Six different agencies and countless women will benefit from money raised locally by Susan G. Komen.
On Tuesday morning the Blue Ridge affiliate announced $318,000 have been distributed to help uninsured and under-insured women get mammograms, education and help dealing with breast cancer.
The affiliate also announced its new executive director- Catherine Turner. Turner is a Roanoke native who has worked with the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Jefferson College.
“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and I don't want that to be my family, my friends,” Turner said. “I don't want it to be anybody, so I want to help us find a cure so that nobody gets the diagnosis of breast cancer again.”
Seventy-five percent of money raised by Susan G. Komen for the Cure stays local, while the other 25 percent goes towards research.
