Locomotive is latest addition to Roanoke railwalk
Cab of former Norfolk Southern engine installed Friday outside the Virginia Museum of Transportation
There's a new addition to Roanoke's railwalk.
The cab of a former Norfolk Southern locomotive is now in place as a permanent exhibit outside the Virginia Museum of Transportation.
It's the latest effort to add unique elements to the outdoor museum.
Bev Fitzpatrick is the Executive Director of the Virginia Museum of Transportation. I can sit in my office and hear the horn blow, and the bell ring further down about a block," he told WDBJ7. "And every time I hear that I know somebody is enjoying something or they're learning something. And that was the whole intention of the city's effort to put this in to begin with."
The rail-side park stretches from the City Market Building to the transportation museum.
It tells the story of Roanoke's rail history with a collection of artifacts that now includes the diesel locomotive donated by Cycle Systems.
