LYNCHBURG, Va. -

A Lynchburg boy is putting the needs of animals in front of his own.

Eli Johnston celebrated his eighth birthday a few weeks ago, but he didn't open any presents.

Instead of asking for gifts, he told friends and relatives to give him donations for the Lynchburg Humane Society.

Johnston was able to pass along several bags of dog food, cat food, and pet toys, which the humane society put to good use.

"I couldn't really think of anything I wanted and I've always loved cats, so I thought it would be a really good idea to give stuff to the humane society," Johnston said.

Johnston is a student at James River Day School in Lynchburg.
