APPOMATTOX, Va. -

A Lynchburg man is facing charges for vandalizing an Appomattox church.

Deputies believe Joshua Vogt broke into Our Lady of Peace Catholic Chuch late Saturday or early Sunday.

When parishioners arrived for Sunday mass, they found broken furniture and debris scattered throughout the sanctuary.

Signs were torn down, a concrete statue was broken in half, and four stained glass windows were shattered.

"It was quite a devastating thought, to watch and see what had been done to the facility we use regularly," said parishioner, Charles Hirtz.  "It was a very disturbing situation."

Investigators don't believe this was a hate crime.

Parishioners say Vogt caused an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 worth of damage.  He's facing felony charges of breaking and entering and vandalism.

The church is insured through the Catholic Diocese of Richmond.
