UPDATE: Driver charged with DUI after deadly Bedford County accident

BEDFORD CO., Va. -

A Lynchburg man has been charged with driving under the influence following a deadly accident Sunday in Bedford County.

Steve Malotely Oulds III of Lynchburg has been charged with DUI after an accident on Route 501. James Gunter was a passenger in the car.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened on Route 501 North, 1.5 miles south of Route 651, around 5:30 p.m.

Gunter was killed after the car hit a guard rail on Route 501 North and flipped. Gunter was 53.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Gunter was the driver of the vehicle. Incorrect information was provided by law enforcement.
