LYNCHBURG, Va. -

One of the happiest and healthiest places to live in America is right here in our region.

Lynchburg is ranked number 37 out of 189 cities for the "well being" of its citizens.

The list was complied by the Gallup organization.  They surveyed thousands of people across the country to find cities that generate the best emotional and physical health.

Lynchburg leaders believe the city's "live healthy" initiative, which encourages healthy eating and exercise habits, helped the city receive its recognition.

"I think that we will certainly use the ranking as a way to promote and brand ourselves as a great city in the commonwealth," said Bonnie Svrcek, Lynchburg's deputy city manager.

The only other Virginia city on the list is Charlottesville, which came in at number 6.
