Students in Lynchburg's public schools are getting more time on the playground.
The city's school board has approved a new wellness policy. It mandates five extra minutes each day for elementary school students to spend on recess or physical activities. The total time rises from 20 to 25 minutes per-day.
Children will also be guaranteed access to water during school meals.
Along with those healthy changes, one amendment was made to accommodate so-called "junk food." School fundraisers can now include candy and cookies, as long as those items aren't sold on campus during school hours.
