MARTINSVILLE, Va. -

The City of Martinsville has named an interim police chief.

Captain Edward Cassady will serve as the interim police chief, starting on Aug. 1. Cassady replaces Mike Rogers, who retires at the end of July.

Cassady has been with the Martinsville Police Department since 1985. He has been the captain of the criminal investigations/services division since 2001.

Additionally, Cassady will help oversee a review of the Martinsville police and sheriff’s department to see if there are some operations that can be consolidated.

“The combined budgets of these two departments is a significant component of the City’s overall budget and while there is a transition in leadership in the Police Department, City staff is undertaking an opportunity to conduct the review to see what possibilities exist”, city manager Leon Towarnicki wrote in a news release.
