Students across Lynchburg are showing off their problem solving skills this weekend.

The Lynchburg chapter of MATHCOUNTS met at Liberty University Saturday for its annual competition.

MATHCOUNTS is like a spelling bee for math and is a national competition for middle school students.

Its goal is to raise students' interest in math in the hopes they'll pursue math-based careers in the future.

For the students it's all about getting recognized for their math skills.

MATHCOUNTS coordinator, Mark Metzger told WDBJ7, "really smart and advanced students, it gives them some kind of competition and some kind of recognition for their academic abilities."

Saturday's winners will advance to the state competition in Richmond.

Those winners will go on to the national competition in Orlando, Florida.
