RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- -

Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe took lunch with Gov. Bob McDonnell at the Executive Mansion, as the Democrat continues to reach out to Republicans.

The two emerged from the lunch Thursday and shared the thrust of their meeting with reporters. Republican McDonnell stressed the importance of working on a bipartisan basis, and McAuliffe agreed with his predecessor.

McDonnell said he told McAuliffe it's important to tone down the partisan rhetoric as governor, work both sides of the aisle and to surround himself with good people. He said McAuliffe's business experience will serve him well.

For his part, McAuliffe expressed his gratitude to McDonnell and called him a class act.
