If you are headed north on 81, you'll need extra drive time.
Montgomery County Schools had buses of students show up late today, and didn't expect things to get much better this afternoon.
Two of the buses that drop kids off at Elliston Elementary were forty minutes late because they got stuck in the detour.
Montgomery County School officials don't expect it to get better as the detour continues.
A robo call went out today letting parents know that their children could be dropped off as much as an hour later than normal, and to expect this to continue through the end of this week.
Because 81 has been under construction in the area for the past few years, school officials say they've learned some tricks to deal with it.
"We've learned that patience is the key and that's it's really important to be patient in these situations across all levels because we want to see a solution quickly, but it doesn't do us any good if, in two weeks, they have to shut that road down again," said Brenda Drake with Montgomery County Schools.
The school system says VDOT had been in communication with them about the delays and getting kids to school on time isn't as important as getting them there safely.
